Coaching has been traditionally associated with the world of sport and elite athletes. In 1974 Tim Gallwey released his best-selling book called The Inner Game of Tennis, in which he explained that tennis players were playing two games at once, the outer game and the inner game. He explained that the outer game is the physical game played against the opponent and inner game is the self-doubt and anxiety a player may have.
Gallwey believes that mastering the inner game is the key to success. This book had a big impact on sports coaching and is recognised as one of the main texts in the history of life coaching as we know it today. Life coaching has roots in humanistic psychology and is now recognised as an essential skill in organisational development, business psychology, performing arts and many social sciences.
