Hypnotherapy - Equan

Hypnotherapy

Relax your conscious mind and replace old, unhelpful thoughts with positive approaches that help you achieve your goals.

Equan hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy works with the deeply relaxed state that we often naturally slip into during our everyday lives.

While in this state we are more in touch with our unconscious thoughts, and able to see which of them may be preventing us from making the changes we want to see.

As your hypnotherapist I can help you to identify and update those patterns that have been holding you back.

And you can forget the images of hypnosis you may have picked up from films or stage magicians – during hypnotherapy you remain in control, and can come out of the relaxed hypnotic state whenever you like

How does hypnotherapy work?

Hypnotherapy shifts the unconscious patterns of thought that influence our everyday actions, so that we are freer to make the changes we want in our lives.

The practice is based on insights from psychology, and increasingly from neuroscience. The conscious part of our mind is the small amount that we are aware of most of the time. It’s the part that is responsible for processing new information and solving problems during our waking hours.

As we have more and more experiences in life, the great majority of the information we take in cannot be held in the conscious part of our brains. Much of this accumulates in our subconscious, where it can exert a powerful but invisible influence on our behaviours.

Freud pictured the conscious mind as the tip of an iceberg.

Freud iceberg mind analogy

Troubling or traumatic experiences are often buried deep within the unconscious mind, being too difficult or painful to acknowledge. These can have an especially large impact on behaviours, especially unwanted ones.

Taking a particular change that you would like to make about yourself, hypnotherapy works to recognise which unhelpful thoughts keep getting in the way of progress.

While you are receptive in the hypnotic state, these thoughts can be replaced with healthier ways of thinking.

What should I expect?

Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation and peace, and can feel similar to daydreaming or guided meditation. For most people it is a comfortable and positive experience, and one that you can come out of freely at any time.

We start with a one-to-one consultation, in which we will talk about the kind of change you’re seeking to make. I will check that hypnotherapy is suitable for you (there are a few medical conditions and circumstances for which it is not appropriate).

Then follows a series of 50-minute sessions. In each of these I guide you into the relaxed state of mind, and we work together to create helpful new patterns of thought.
