The GROW model
The GROW model was originally developed in the 1980s by business coaches Graham Alexander, Alan Fine, and Sir John Whitmore. The model is one of the most well known coaching approaches and has 4 main steps.
Goal
What are your goals and what do you want to achieve through coaching? What is important to you? What does your ultimate life look like?
Reality
Where are you now? What are you happy about? What are you unhappy about? What are you good at? What drains your energy?
Options
What could you do? What could you do differently? What could you change about your behaviour? What could you change about your outlook on life?
Way
What are the actions that you need to take to achieve your goals? Coaching provides a safe space for you to test try many different options, learning more and more about yourself as you work through the different options.
OSKAR coaching model
The OSKAR coaching model was developed by coaches Mark McKergow and Paul Z. Jackson in 2002 and was made popular through the success of their book The Solutions Focus: Making Coaching and Change Simple. The model is a solutions focused approach and contains five major stages.
Outcome
What are the desired results of coaching? What are the short-, medium- and long-term goals? What will this look like when you have achieved it?
Scaling
On a scale of 1 – 10 where are you in relation to the desired future state?
Know-how
Now you know where you want to what do you need to get there? What are the skills, knowledge, qualifications and behaviours you need to achieve your goals?
Affirm & Action
What is already working well? What is already positive about the situation? What are your skills, behaviours, attitudes and attributes that will help you succeed? What action do you now need to take?
Review
At this point you have to review the entire process against your client’s desired actions. Understand what is better and what can be changed next.
